In France, only alpine lawns above 2,000 m are natural. Here, between 1500 and 1700 meters above sea level, without the intervention of men and herds, the forest should cover almost all areas. By gradually removing the original vegetation, generations of shepherds have helped to create and maintain a new environment in the region: a subalpine lawn. This area, which belongs to the National Forestry Office, is maintained by a pastoral grouping of four farms with 2,200 ewes on 714 ha of moors and lawns.
