SAINT-LAURENT CHURCH

Religious Sites

Mont Lozere
48250 LA BASTIDE-PUYLAURENT

The church of Saint-Laurent de Puylaurent, of modest size, is nonetheless one of the jewels of religious art in the canton of Villefort. Of ancient construction (at least from the 12th century), it remained the seat of a parish for a millennium.
Having undergone very few modifications and damage over time, it constitutes a precious testimony to Romanesque religious architecture.
It is composed of a single nave of two barrel-vaulted bays and a semi-circular apse with a cul-de-four vault. A decoration of arcatures resting on columns with sculpted capitals, very characteristic, is present on the wall of the apse, but also outside on the bedside.
The two-bay bell tower appears to be original.
On the other hand, the side chapel to the south is a late addition, probably from the 16th century. It is vaulted with projecting edges, the keystone of which is carved with a coat of arms.
